This Is What the In-between Feels Like

There’s a season where nothing is obviously wrong, but nothing feels fully right either.

From the outside, life looks fine. You’re capable. You’re functioning. You’re doing what needs to be done. But underneath, there’s a quiet sense of misalignment. A feeling you can’t quite name.

It’s not a crisis.
It’s not a breakdown.
And it’s not necessarily a desire to blow everything up and start over.

It’s more subtle than that.

The in-between often feels like restlessness without urgency. Like tiredness that sleep doesn’t quite fix. Like curiosity mixed with resistance.

You’re not unhappy, exactly. But you’re not settled either.

When the old shape of life doesn’t quite fit

Midlife has a way of making things visible.

Priorities that once seemed obvious become less certain. Work that used to feel important may not hold the same weight. Routines you’ve relied on for years can start to feel strangely disconnected from the person you are now.

Even things you chose — and still value — can begin to sit differently.

That doesn’t mean those choices were wrong. It may simply mean you’ve changed.

Maybe the discomfort isn’t telling you to start over.

Maybe it’s asking you to notice what still fits, what doesn’t, and what you want to make more room for now.

You don’t need the answer yet

I think this is where we often make the in-between harder than it needs to be.

We feel unsettled, so we immediately start looking for a solution. A new job. A new routine. A big goal. A dramatic change. Something that will make the uncertainty disappear.

But clarity doesn’t always arrive as an answer.

Sometimes it starts with better questions.

  • What feels heavier than it used to?
  • What am I doing mostly because I’ve always done it?
  • What do I want more of in ordinary life?
  • What am I curious about, even if I’m not ready to act on it?
  • What would I change if it didn’t have to become a whole new life?

You don’t have to answer all of them today.

Sometimes noticing the question is enough to begin.

The in-between can be useful

There’s an uncomfortable freedom in not quite knowing what comes next.

The old assumptions loosen a little. You get to examine things instead of simply continuing them. You can keep what still works, change what doesn’t, and experiment with the parts you’re unsure about.

Not everything needs to become a five-year plan.

Some things can simply be explored.

A different way of working. A project that interests you. More independence. Less busyness. A neglected part of yourself. A quieter life. A bigger one.

The point isn’t to reinvent yourself.

It’s to get curious about the person who’s already here.
